Title of Class: Maths and English for Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Class Description: From September, The Right Tuition Company (RTC) will offer English and Maths classes to children in Years 5 and 6, who are higher functioning ASD pupils. This class is aimed at providing a solution for those children that may struggle in a mixed neurotypical class environment.

Here at RTC, we recognise that to learn well, AS children need structure. They respond when they have clear, consistent direction. Our tutor, Sarah Patten, understands the sensory and social challenges that sometimes prevent ASD children from achieving their potential. Her unique approach to teaching children on the spectrum. is to tune into their specific needs and build their confidence by allowing them to be who they are.

The class will have an orderly routine and any workflow changes will be flagged up clearly. Extra verbal and visual cues are employed to help with transitions. These verbal cues are short, direct and concrete.

The classes are calm, quiet and uncluttered to limit visual distractions.

In the class we offer a quiet corner of the room as a safe place where students, who might feel overwhelmed initially, can sit and ‘re-group’ for a few minutes. Sometimes, just knowing that there is a quiet space option can give these children added confidence.

Students with Asperger’s often encounter handwriting deficits. Our classes will allow for extra time in order to work on relevant handwritten exercises.

This class will benefit higher functioning spectrum children, both, academically and socially; building their confidence in a safe learning environment.
